Focus on Garden Clubs and Societies - CotswoldsWorcestershire Group of the National Hardy Plant SocietyThe aim of the group is to act as a meeting place for those who share a common interest in plants, gardens and gardening. Monthly meetings are held at Peopleton Village Hall, between Worcester and Pershore where professional speakers are engaged to talk on a wide range of garden and plant related topics. Members and invited guest nurseries offer interesting and inexpensively priced plants for sale. The indoor programme is complemented in the summer by a series of coffee mornings at members’ gardens, a garden party and coach excursions to more remote gardens of special interest as well as more extended garden tours. Membership is open to members of the national HPS. During the summer months we visit wonderful gardens and nurseries in Herefordshire and Gloucestershire to glean practical tips and advice on growing practices and suitable plants for our own gardens. Slimbridge Horticultural SocietySlimbridge Horticultural Society was started in 1942, in response to the Second World War Dig for Victory Campaign, and has been flourishing ever since. Some of the earliest members joined while still at school, went on to become officers or to chair the society and their names can still be seen on some of our prize winners’ cups.We hold talks monthly during the winter months, on everything from plants to bonsai to bee keeping, and in addition have two shows, one in spring and one in summer and an annual plant sale, all of which are very popular. We have a competition on the best kept village garden, again both in spring and summer and an annual coach excursion to a garden, this year to Westonbury Mill Water Gardens and Hergest Croft Gardens in Herefordshire. This year we plan to hold practical sessions on topics such as A Willow hurdles, Flower arranging, Tubs and hanging baskets, as well as our regular talks, Ferns and Ivies, Gloucestershire Apple orchards, and Birds in the Garden. It is a small, friendly and very active club with a growing membership drawn from both Slimbridge and outlying villages. Membership is £7 per family, talks are £2 to visitors who are always welcome. Shipston and District Gardening Club, WarwickshireThe club was founded in November 1995, and there are now about 60 members who meet every month in the junior school at Shipston-on-Stour at 7.30pm every second Wednesday of the month. There is a varied programme of demonstration, propagation of perennials and planting of hanging baskets, for example. There is also a varied selection of slide shows, ranging from Plants of the Alps, to Wildlife Photography. Everybody is welcome at our meetings. If you would like further details contact chairman Tony Mitchell on 01608 666933.
Spetchley and District Gardeners’ SocietyThe club was established by the father of John Berkeley of Spetchely Park and Berkeley Castle for the benefit of workers on that Worcestershire estate. It has since extended its boundaries and today draws its members from the surrounding villages as well as from tenants and workers on the estate itself. However it remains a small and friendly society, meeting out of tradition at the atmospheric Old School House, Spetchley, which was once attended by Edward Elgar and which is also now known as the village hall. Indoor meetings are held throughout the year at which a speaker talks on subjects ranging from hemerocallis to hostas; the wild flowers of Cyprus to well dressing. An annual show is held in August and a spring bulb show in April. There are also garden visits in the summer. Annual membership costs only £5.00 with free entry to meetings. Visitors are welcome.
