The garden designed around the theme of Psalm 23, famously known as ‘The Lord is My Shepherd’, which won a gold medal at September’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show, is to be rebuilt at Winchester Hospice.

The garden, designed by Sarah Eberle, who has won 17 gold medals at previous Chelsea and Hampton Court flower shows, uses plants and a design that reflects the theme of the famous psalm – the green pastures, still waters and the valley of the shadow of death.

The garden, which was entered at Chelsea by the Bible Society, will find a permanent home at the Winchester Hospice, in Hampshire after the show. Maddy Thomson, clinical matron of palliative and end of life care at Hampshire Hospitals, said, “The garden will represent such a special place for our patients and their families, who can enjoy precious moments together or perhaps find quiet reflection in this beautiful outdoor space.

“We are absolutely delighted that we will be able to offer this as part of the care and support we provide and know that it will make such a difference to the families being supported by Winchester Hospice.”

It is hoped that communities will build Psalm 23 gardens around the country. The first was at Tadley, near Basingstoke, Hampshire, built by local people during the lockdown in 2020. The Bible Society has published an easy-to-use guide and a video, and there are special resources for schools.
